Searching for the best dishwasher is sometimes like trying to find the end of a rainbow. There are hundreds of models to choose from, and it seems like the more you look, the more confusing and elusive your goal becomes.

To help narrow down your search, why not start with the best brands first, and then work your way down the list? According to J.D. Power & Associate's 2009 Home Appliance Study, the top 5 dishwasher brands for overall customer satisfaction are Kenmore Elite, Bosch, Maytag, KitchenAid, and LG.

In our own study of over 200 dishwashers, we rated each appliance in 40 key areas. The top 5 brands that consistently scored at the top in almost every price range were GE, Maytag, Kenmore, KitchenAid, and Frigidaire.

The best dishwasher brands common to both studies are Kenmore, Maytag, and KitchenAid. Let's take a look at their top models:

1. Kenmore 13183 - This stainless steel dishwasher scored 10 out of 10 in our study. It has a stainless steel exterior, stainless steel inner tub, and hidden controls for a sleek, modern look. The 13183 sprays water to 6 different levels, supplements with spray jets, and has a NSF certified sanitary rinse cycle. The design is "Tall Tub" and it holds up to 14 place settings. The racks are adjustable, and you'll love the quietness with only a 52 dbA sound rating. The 13183 is also Energy Star qualified with a 300 kWh annual electricity usage.

2. Maytag MDB8959AWS - Rated 9.8 out of 10, this Maytag has stainless steel inside and out, and the controls are hidden at the top. The cleaning system is one of the best with 5 wash levels, spray jets, steam, and a sanitary rinse. Its eco-friendliness is evident in several areas including a low 291 kWh rating and 4.2 gallon per cycle water usage. The MDB8959AWS holds 14 place settings in the tall tub, and the racks are adjustable. Noise levels are slightly higher than the Kenmore at 56 dbA, but still very good.

3. KitchenAid KUDE70FVSS - With hidden controls and stainless steel all around, this best dishwasher also scored 10 out of 10. Water spray is delivered to 5 levels while the jets scrub and scour any heavily soiled items. The NSF sanitary rinse finishes up a wash cycle that is one of the best. As far as noise goes, it's one of the quietest dishwashers you can buy. At 41 dbA, only Bosch makes a slightly quieter dishwasher at 40 dbA.

Bosch Dishwashers Review

!±8± Bosch Dishwashers Review

Bosch is one of the top appliance manufacturers in the world. It is a true representation of German quality of manufacture and each dishwasher is built like a tank to last a lifetime. If you get a Bosch now, you would probably not need to replace it for a few decades, and even then not because of any defects, but simply because it has just become too old.

Of course with this quality of manufacture you will have to pay through your nose to get one of their high end ones. In fact Bosch has dishwashers that top the 00 mark, but then they are the best in the market, so no denying that either. The only good thing is that their basic models give you mostly everything that you need with the extra cost for the higher end ones going for extra functions and user friendliness.

For example if you take their cheapest option, SHE4AP024UC and their top of the line SHX68E15UC, there is more than 00 separating them. One costs 0 while the other costs 00. If however you get down to the nitty gritty you find that there is not much difference when it comes to washing dishes in them. Of course the cheaper one does not have adjustable racks, but apart from this if you look at the features that you get, this model itself would be more than sufficient for most families.

You get 4 wash cycles which is all that most people use anyway, a stainless steel drum, half load option with energy saver option, leak protection, NSF certification to say that 99.9% of the bacteria has been removed in the wash, a concealed heating element so that plastics don't melt, a 14 place setting and up to a 9 hr delay. It is also quite quiet with a 53 db rating which is around standard for a quiet dishwasher.

If you take their top of the line product, it comes with a 15 place setting, has everything that the basic one has apart from real cool LED lights under it to tell you that the washing is going on. This is supposedly necessary because at 40 db it is the quietest in the world. Why you would need this when you are the one that has loaded it is a little beyond us, but at 00 all this is necessary to push the product. If you think that the lights are there so that no one should open it when it is running, even the most basic model comes with a child proof lock so that no one can open it when it is running.

Everything else is extra features. You get a 24 hr delayed start, and a full LED display, plus a triple filtration system. There are 6 wash cycles and you get a very good looking machine, a machine that tells everyone that you have paid 00 for it.

As you can see their basic model is more than sufficient and if you feel that the adjustable racks are a necessity then you can go in for their next line that costs around 0. Paying so much to get something that effectively gives you only very little over their basic model is really not worth it.

The good thing about Bosch is that whether you get their cheapest one or their best one, the quality of manufacture is the same which is why many people actually prefer going with a basic Bosch to a more upmarket model from another manufacturer.

The Best Dishwashers on the Market at Differing Price Ranges

!±8± The Best Dishwashers on the Market at Differing Price Ranges

All dishwashers were not created equal. While it may not be quite as fun as picking out a new car or pair of jeans, a quality dishwasher will make your life so much easier, while a substandard one will lead to constant frustration and extra work. When looking for a new dishwasher, it's important to investigate each candidate's energy efficiency, audible volume, load time, rack space, and overall washing ability. You need to make sure that the dishwasher loads easily and cleans your dishes exhaustively. Of all the products on the market, one dishwasher stood out above the rest.

If you want a sleek, high-quality dishwasher, the Bosch Ascenta SHX5AL0 Fully Integrated Dishwasher is the product for you. At just over 0, it is a great value for a dependable dishwasher that is big enough to house 14 place settings and runs quietly (53 dBA). It is Energy Star qualified, offers a triple filtration system, and the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) certified that it eliminates 99.9% of bacteria. It also features a handy 30-minute "quick wash" cycle that is helpful for those in a rush. If you are looking for a quality dishwasher that is still a great value, this is the place to start.

For those who are looking to pay under 0 but still looking for quality, Whirlpool's GU2300XTVQ 24-in. Under Counter Dishwasher and GE's GSC3500NBB 24" Portable Dishwasher are both also highly recommended. While it isn't quite as chic as the Bosch model, the Whirpool is an extremely functional washer that offers a litany of different wash cycles. Running around 5, it also is substantially cheaper than the aforementioned Bosch. The GE model is a quality portable dishwasher that has top-class energy efficiency and many desirable features for under 0. There are many options on the market, and you don't need to break the bank to get great quality.
